For most of the last millennium, the primary human enterprise on Russia's Yamal Peninsula, 600 kilometers north of the Arctic circle, has been the herding of reindeer by the nomadic Nenets people. In recent years, however, it has hosted one of Russia's largest energy development projects, Yamal LNG, a joint venture with French and Chinese firms to extract liquefied natural gas. Photographer Julien Goldstein recently visited the area to document how the project has transformed both the physical and social landscape of the Yamal Peninsula.
