Maria Turchenkova (1987, Moscow) is freelance documentary photographer based in Moscow, Russia.
After 5 years of radio journalism she took up photography in 2009 and began her career by documenting political issues in Moscow and covering stories about opposition activists.
Now she is concentrated on political and social issues covering daily news and conducting her own documentary projects.
Since 2011, her attention has focused primarily on the North Caucasus, Russia.
She works independently as a photojournalist on a long-term project ‘Hidden War In The Land Of Mountains’ in Dagestan. She follows compassionate and empathetic approach towards the human stories she covers, uncovering issues that are under-reported or ignored
She operates by all means of new media in her work producing Multimedia projects.
